Neurosurgery United: Stronger Together

Over the next few months, AANS Neurosurgeon will explore the theme of the 2021 AANS Annual Meeting, Neurosurgery United: Stronger Together. As AANS President Dr. Wilson notes, the Annual meeting theme selection predated the COVID-19 pandemic, but appears to have been a prescient choice.

We chose to explore this theme from different angles. Neurological surgery continues to benefit from collaboration with other specialties, including anesthesiology, critical care, neurology, orthopedic surgery and Radiology. Multidisciplinary efforts lead to evolution of and improvement in medical and surgical treatment options, thus leading to improved patient outcomes.

Since the inception of the field, the face of neurosurgery too has evolved to mirror the changing demographic within our medical schools, communities and the world. The diversity of faces in our field, with their respective unique experiences and perspectives, will only lead to innovation and advancement.

As neurosurgeons, we share a passion for treating disorders of the central and peripheral nervous system; the language we speak is one that unites us. The shared experiences of residency, unforgettable patients and surgical disappointments and successes are ones that unite and bind us. We can and do learn from each other – not only from those who have come before us, but also from those who come after us. Life lessons come from many sources; we have to be receptive to the perspectives of others.
