AANS Neurosurgeon: Editor’s Perspective

The AANS Neurosurgeon is not only the socioeconomic-centered journal of the AANS but also the creative and personal voice of neurosurgeons and for neurosurgeons. I assumed the editor role of the publication in March 2020, just before the Covid lockdown commenced. Over the past eighteen months, the publication has served as a means for us to remain connected, to share our views, our experiences, our lessons. As neurosurgeons, we have intimate knowledge of what defines life and being human; we discuss this candidly on a daily basis with our patients, their families, our trainees, and colleagues. The human experience is universal; the neurosurgical experience perhaps not. However, as neurosurgeons, not only do we share the neurosurgical experience; we also share the human experience. It is a diverse and rich experience that each of us brings to our neurosurgical practice. In the next three issues of AANS Neurosurgeon, you will hear the voice of our colleagues. Perhaps you will see yourself reflected in their stories or perhaps you will see an alternate journey that has culminated in a common destination. Regardless, the ability to see the beauty in each one of us, the complexity, depth of emotion, and the simplicity of the human condition, is a gift. Broaden your perspective and look through the lens of neurosurgery.

Many thanks to Dr. Isabelle Germano; she, as Guest Editor for this issue, had a vision. Countless hours of effort and creativity were spent in making this issue a reality. The next three months will see the release of contributions that address diversity, work-life blending, and the human element. You will hear the voices of your neurosurgical colleagues in a unique way as they share their candid thoughts.
