    Arizona The Arizona Neurosurgical Society held its fall meeting in Tucson on Oct. 13, 2001. Five residents presented papers in competition for the John Green Award Resident. The first place paper received $500, and the second place paper, $250. The first place paper, “Interactive Stereoscopic Virtual Reality: A New Technique for Neurosurgical Education,” was presented by Jeffrey Henn, MD. There was a tie for second place: “Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF) 110 Consecutive Cases” by Gregory Lekovic, MD; and “Cranial Vertebral Junction Fixation with Transarticular Screws: Biomechanical Analysis of a Novel Technique” by L. Fernando Gonzales, MD. Both received the cash award. The business meeting included reports from representatives who attended the CSNS and AMA meetings and the National Leadership Conference. Also, the officers elected to take office in 2002 were announced: President Stephen Ritland, MD; President-elect Philip Carter, MD; Treasurer Joseph M.     Arkansas The Arkansas Neurosurgical Society, also known as The Robert Watson Society, held its reorganizational meeting Aug. 24, 2001. Preliminary bylaws for reorganization were worked out and approved and an interim slate of officers was elected: President Kenneth Tonymon, MD; Vice President Ali F. Krisht, MD; Secretary Mark E. Linskey, MD; Treasurer Kelly R. Danks, MD; South Regional Director Freddie L. Contreras, MD; Central Regional Director Tim Burson, MD; North Regional Director Anthony L. Capocelli, MD; and Acting Immediate Past President Thomas M. Fletcher, MD.

    New England The New England Neurosurgical Society met on Sept. 21, 2001, at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Mass. The potential merger of New England state neurosurgical societies into the New England Neurosurgical Society was discussed. The society’s Annual Resident Award was named in memory of its first president, William B. Scoville, MD. Upcoming noon lectures were named the Sweet, Donaghy, and Whitcomb lectures in honor of neurosurgeons who have been active in the society. The scientific session started at noon, with a special lecture by Lycurgus Davey, MD, on the research he has done regarding the Hippocratic oath. Presenters included: Steven Kalkanis, MD; Peng Chen, MD, Vasillious Zaras, MD; Peter Catalano, MD; Edward R. Smith, MD; James Kryzanski, MD; Henry Pallatroni, MD; Hulda Magnadottir, MD; and Robert E. Harbaugh, MD. The winter meeting will be held March 1, 2002, at the Killington Grand Hotel in Killington, Vt. Thomas A. Marshall, executive director of the AANS, will make a presentation at noon regarding the activities of the AANS. The summer meeting will be held on June 7 at the Colonial Inn in Concord, Mass. A. John Popp, MD, will give a special noon presentation on the activities of the Washington Committee. He will be available following the presentation to answer any questions about this very important committee of the AANS and CNS. The autumn meeting will be held Sept. 13, 2002, in Newport, R.I, at the Newport Marriott.
