In medicine, as in life, there are rare individuals whose influence transcends their own generation—whose singular vision shapes the path for countless others. In the field of neurosurgery, Professor M. Gazi Yaşargil was one such figure. Widely regarded as the father of modern neurosurgery, his contributions revolutionized surgical technique and redefined what was possible in brain and spine care.
In April 2025, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons honored Professor Yaşargil with its Distinguished Service Award at the Annual Scientific Meeting in Boston. Just weeks later, on June 10, 2025, he passed away — a profound loss for the global neurosurgical community, and just shy of his 100th birthday.
Before his passing, Professor Yaşargil and his wife, Dianne, recorded a deeply personal video reflecting on his life, work and legacy. Surrounded by handmade anatomical models and memories from his childhood, Professor Yaşargil speaks to the enduring importance of craftsmanship, curiosity and care. The video now stands as a remarkable tribute to a life of purpose — one rooted not only in scientific excellence, but in humanity.
As AANS Neurosurgeon explores this issue’s theme, “The Power of One, The Impact of Many,” Yaşargil’s story is a timely reminder that the ripple effects of one individual’s dedication can reshape an entire field. His legacy lives on not only in the tools he developed or the techniques he refined, but in every surgeon he mentored and every life touched by his work.
