Established in 1990, Women in Neurosurgery (WINS) is an official section of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS). As such, it is dedicated to promoting the success and advancement of women in the field of neurosurgery. WINS advocates for gender equity and diversity within the profession and provides resources and support for women neurosurgeons at all stages of their careers.

Some of the ways in which WINS advocates for women in neurosurgery include:

Mentorship: WINS provides formal and informal mentorship opportunities for female neurosurgeons and neurosurgical trainees, pairing them with experienced mentors who can provide guidance and support throughout their careers. In 2022, the WINS Mentorship Program more than doubled its initial cohort, matching more than 100 resident applicants into its program. https://newsletters.aans.org/wins/summer-2021/wins-mentorship-program/

Networking: At all national conferences, WINS hosts events that allow women neurosurgeons to connect with one another, share ideas and build professional relationships. For example, at the upcoming 2023 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting in Los Angeles, WINS will be hosting both its annual WINS Breakfast and the WINS Celebration, a belated 30th birthday event. Semi-annual virtual “Happy Hours” also allow women to stay connected through the year.

Leadership Development: During annual meetings, WINS offers leadership development programs to help female neurosurgeons develop the skills and knowledge needed to excel in leadership roles within their organizations.

Advocacy: WINS advocates for policies and initiatives that promote gender equity and diversity within the field of neurosurgery.  This includes promoting the recruitment and retention of women neurosurgeons and addressing issues related to work-life balance and discrimination.

Research: Over the years, WINS and its members have played pivotal roles conducting research and collecting data on the experience of women in neurosurgery. Such data have raised awareness about the contributions of women neurosurgeons, as well as the challenges they face.

Supporting the Next Generation: WINS has had a long history supporting and mentoring neurosurgery residents. Recent activities have expanded these efforts to include medical students with the belief that advocacy for the profession begins with encouraging and attracting the best and brightest individuals to join our profession.

WINS is an important advocate for women in neurosurgery, and its work is critical to ensuring that the field continues to benefit from the talents and perspectives of a diverse range of individuals.
