In an effort to support neurosurgery with premier education during the pandemic, the AANS launched its first virtual coding course, AANS Managing Coding & Reimbursement Challenges in Neurosurgery. With constructive content, AANS faculty and staff expeditiously transitioned the in-person, densely packed course into two half-day virtual sessions.

Witnessing a substantial boost in user engagement, Course Director John Ratliff, MD, FAANS, commented, “The COVID-19 crisis forced us to fast-forward a plan that we had considered for years: Doing a virtual coding course. Our plan was to keep the same content and faculty, but offer it online.”

He continued, “AANS has a long track record of offering excellent, top-of-the-line courses focused on neurosurgery and spine coding. We did not want to do anything to detract from our position as the industry leader in coding education.”

In agreement, Course Director Luis Tumialan, MD, FAANS, remarked, “During this unprecedented time, where travel and group meetings remain a challenge, the AANS coding faculty have ensured that coding and reimbursement education for our surgeons and coders continues. To that end, the in-person AANS Managing Coding and Reimbursement course has morphed into a virtual format and the first was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews. Be assured, that the AANS coding faculty will continue to innovate with each course as we continue to evolve these virtual meetings.”

Comprised of 98 participants, including practicing neurosurgeons, professional coders and practice managers, the first livestreamed coding course was an enormous success.

Attendee Reviews

These rave reviews attest to the AANS’ leadership in coding education. Registration is now open for the next virtual coding course scheduled for September 10-12. Learn more about the course at https://www.aans.org/Education.

  • Be ready to have your socks knocked off … you are going to realize you know a lot of stuff and feel good about that … and then you’ll sit back and say to yourself HMMMMM, WHO KNEW about other stuff. [The] course was very detailed, very organized, very clear!
  • Love the ability to enter questions online during the speaker’s lecture – this improved the Q&A section and did not allow attendees to digress.
  • Take the Live-Stream conference rather than the face-to-face course – it is more time and cost-efficient and the material is terrific.
  • This course is extremely thorough and covers just about any surgical scenario in a neurosurgeon’s practice.
  • I want to join the chorus of attendees thanking you and the presenters for the virtual course in Managing Coding & Reimbursement Challenges in Neurosurgery. It was truly excellent. This is the first time I have attended and it was very much worth the time and cost.
