evolution of lighting, with candle, tungsten, fluorescent and LED bulb

In January 2017, I had the distinct pleasure and challenge of completing a strenuous hike through the wilds of Patagonia. The hikes totaled more than 100 miles over two weeks through unrivaled and other-worldly scenery. Shortly before departure, when the complete roster of just 14 individuals – all similarly motivated for such an adventure – arrived, I could not resist the temptation to “research” the others through the wonder of Google. Imagine my surprise (not entirely positive) upon realizing that there was another neurosurgeon who would be making the trek! Vacations, after all, are a time to put work and its challenges behind. In the end, the travels were amazing, and my time conversing with this neurosurgeon was noteworthy. RS completed his residency the year I graduated from college, but he was deeply connected to an earlier generation of neurosurgeons through his father. As such, I was provided a glimpse into more than 75 years of neurosurgical history.

Too often, history is viewed exclusively through a narrow lens. Yaa Gyasi provides one of the most poignant representations of this in her stunning debut novel “Homecoming:”

o

“We believe the one who has power. He is the one who gets to write the story. So when you study history you must ask yourself, Whose story am I missing?, Whose voice was suppressed so that this voice could come forth? Once you have figured that out, you must find that story too. From there you get a clearer, yet still imperfect, picture.”

This issue of AANS Neurosurgeon views the evolution of our specialty through this clearer, though still imperfect, view. To accomplish this, we have turned to those who have immersed themselves in the history of neurosurgery as well as those who lived it.

Credit for the origins of this endeavor go to the amazing Chris Philips, longtime AANS staff, who has forgotten more about the members of the AANS than most of us ever knew. I was shocked to learn there are more than a dozen living AANS members born before 1920 and over 50 born before 1925! They are all noteworthy pioneers who have also witnessed a remarkable span of medical, social and technological evolution. We bring you a small slice of this and encourage anyone connected to these individuals to capture their stories and share them with us.

As we look back, we also must look forward. Michael Schulder, MD, FAANS, the remarkable, dedicated and talented editor of the AANS Neurosurgeon for the last five years has passed that baton to me. I am grateful for this honor and will work hard to make AANS Neurosurgeon a useful and entertaining resource for all neurosurgeons.
