The Medical Minute: True Dangers of Concussion and CTE Often Misunderstood

The recent movie, “Concussion”, starring Will Smith, has brought further media attention to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). CTE has been linked to repeated head trauma. After retirement from a contact sport, athletes can be at risk for developing this condition. Although awareness of CTE is great, Dr. Robert Harbaugh, AANS past president and director of the Penn State Institute of Neurosciences, said many scientists have more questions about CTE than they do answers. “It’s an easily understood and seemingly compelling story to say that someone plays football because of this they develop a degenerative brain disease years later.
