According to a study led by Stanford University School of Medicine, injecting modified, human adult stem cells directly into the brains of chronic stroke patients has been proven both safe and effective in restoring motor function. During the injections, patients were conscious under light anesthesia. Surgeons drilled a small hole through their skulls and were then able to inject the stem cells directly into the brains. Each patient when home the next day. One patient, Sonia Olea Coontz, suffered from a stroke and lost the use of her right arm. Her right leg worked, but not very well.
