Every year in the U.S., 1.7 million patients are diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Based on other research, there is evidence that this number is rising throughout the world. In this study, researchers found that patients who had suffered a TBI were still experiencing sleep problems a year and a half after the injury occurred. However, most of these patients are not aware of just how much their sleep is being disturbed. “Excessive daytime sleepiness is associated with public safety hazards such as car accidents, so people with TBI and their doctors should be monitoring for this problem,” Imbach said. “The study also shows us that people with TBI may not be ale to accurately assess their own sleep problems. Since this is how the sleep quality of many people with TBI is assessed, this may be a concern.” To read more on this study, click here
