Texas A&M College of Dentistry researcher uses revolutionary technique to reduce orofacial pain

With patients who suffer from migraine, many find little relief with medications and are forced to suffer through the pain and sensitivity to light. However, in this study, researchers were investigating whether light would actually be the key to symptom relief. By using a technique known as optogenetic manipulation, they attempted to control neuronal activity in the nervous system by either inhibiting or exciting neurons. “If we could use optogenetic stimulation to manipulate neuronal activities in the neural circuits that contribute to the development of migraines, we could possibly reduce migraine headaches,” Tao said.
