A study being presented at the Association of Academic Physiatrists Annual Meeting in Sacramento, Calif. reports the benefits of utilizing robotic exoskeletons in stroke recovery to regain motor skill and muscular structure. The study followed 14 subjects in various phases of stroke recovery who undertook therapy sessions in which an exoskeleton allowed them full range of movement. Accelerated recovery time compared to control subjects was noted in most. “Rehabilitation for individuals with stroke is time and labor intensive,” explained the lead investigator. “Hence rehabilitation technology is being developed to facilitate more therapy with limited human resources, with the help of robots for rehabilitation. However, the use of robots for rehabilitation may not be a one-size-fits all approach. We need to understand how to optimize training for individual patients.” To learn more about this study, click here.
