Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health researchers have developed “mini-brains” comprised of neurons and cells of the human brain that can be replicated on a larger scale. Researchers say these new brains could take the place of hundreds of thousands of animals for the testing of new drugs in the U.S. Using these “mini-brains” would also be superior to studying animals, such as mice and rats based on their structure being derived from human cells. “Ninety-five percent of drugs that look promising when tested in animal models fail once they are tested in humans at great expense of time and money,” says study leader Thomas Hartung, MD, PhD.
