Researchers look for better ways to reduce memory loss in people with age-related disorders

Although the human brain can be malleable in certain ways, it is still subjected to the threat of age-related illnesses, such as dementia, and loss of cognitive function. In these instances, it would be valuable to be able to replaces damaged brain cells therefore restoring memory with with neural stem cells. In this study, Ashok K. Shetty, PhD, and his team took neural stem cells and implanted them into the hippocampus of an animal model to allow for them to regenerate tissue. “We chose the hippocampus because it’s so important in learning, memory and mood fuction,” Shetty said. We’re interested in understanding aging in the brain, especially in the hippocampus, which seems particularly vulnerable to age-related changes.” To read more, click here.
