A commonly used type of antidepressant drug called fluoxetine, typically sold under the brand name Prozac, has been shown to have highly effective results when used after a stroke in regards to recovering movement and coordinator. Researchers from John Hopkins University published a team study in the journal Stroke reporting this finding, along with suggested explanations of why this unexpected reaction is occurring. “There are some who believe fluoxetine can reduce the amount of brain tissue that dies after a stroke,” said the lead researcher of the study. “In fact, there was more — not less — brain tissue death in the animals that got fluoxetine than in those that did not. We didn’t predict that, but the fact that the animals actually got better — despite increased cell death — tells us that fluoxetine is having some pretty amazing effects.” To learn more about this study, click here.
