Pituitary Insufficiency is Prevalent After Blast Concussion in Military Veterans

In a recent study on 41 male military veterans who had been deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, researchers uncovered those who suffered from a blast-related concussion also frequently suffered from hormone changes that led to problems such as sleep disturbances, fatigue, depression or poor quality of life. “Some of these hormone deficiencies, which mimic some symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, may be treated successfully with hormone replacement if correctly diagnosed,” said the study’s leader, Charles Wilkinson, PhD, a researcher in the Veterans Affairs (VA) Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle.
