Recently, there has been a link discovered between commonly prescribed drugs used to treat Parkinson’s disease and impulse control disorders (ICDs) such as pathological gambling, compulsive buying, hypersexuality and binge eating in some patients. As such, these disorders can take a major toll on the personal and professional lives of patients. They may also suffer financial consequences as well. In this article, the authors discuss possible alternative treatments for patients who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease that could curb ICDs, including antidepressants, atypical antipsychotics and antiepileptic drugs. There may also be some nondrug treatments that could be effective, including cognitive behavioral therapy and a “brain pacemaker” called deep brain stimulation.
