A collaborative study conducted by multiple international universities published in Environmental International concluded that chronic exposure to low doses of a pesticide commonly used decades ago, but remains in the ecosystem, may still lead to impairment of cognitive development. Previously linked to various conditions, this is the first study to directly correlate impaired development on its own without outside factors. The lead researcher explained, “The results show that individuals with high levels of three OCPs (p,p’-DDE (a metabolite of DDT), transnona-chlordane and hexachlorobenzene) had about 3 times higher future risk of cognitive impairment than elders with low levels of OCP. These results are independent of factors such as sex, smoking, diabetes, exercise habits, alcohol intake, weight change and high blood pressure.” To learn more about this study, click here.
