Intervention Methods of Stroke Need to Focus on Prevention for Blacks to Reduce Stroke Mortality

In a recent study, researchers in the Reasons for Geographical and Racial Differences in Stroke Study found that blacks are four times more likely to die of stroke at age 45 compared to other races due to an increased rate of stroke in patients that fall into this demographic. Due to the elevated number of stroke, doctors are starting to feel the pressure to focus more on stroke prevention tactics. “We need to do more to focus on prevention and control of risk factors before they result in a stroke,” said George Howard, PhD. Currently, most research is focusing on treating stroke patients and preventing recurrent strokes. Few studies are looking at whether an increased stroke rate among blacks is the predictor for more stroke deaths. To read more, click here.
