The Neurosurgery Executives’ Resource Value & Education Society (NERVES) is the only national neurosurgery practice administrator society in the U.S. NERVES was established as an initiative of the Council of State Neurosurgical Societies (CSNS) to help neurosurgery practice administrators network, combine resources to gather information and learn from experts and colleagues about how to build stronger practices. The current NERVES board members from the CSNS are Nicholas C. Bambakidis, MD, FAANS, and Andrew E. Wakefield, MD, FAANS.

NERVES holds its Annual Meeting the weekend prior to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) Annual Scientific Meeting each spring and continues the network and dialogue throughout the year with an active listserv where members ask questions, share knowledge and exchange information. The 2017 meeting will take place in Los Angeles, April 20–22. The NERVES Financial and Annual Meeting committee is preparing a great agenda for both educational experiences and networking sessions for members.

A highlight of every year, group roundtable discussions are separated out based on academic, hospital-based and private practice groups varying between Small (1-5 neurosurgeons), Medium (6-10 neurosurgeons) and Large (10+ neurosurgeons). These open discussion sessions are often the most beneficial sessions of the Annual Meeting. Discussion topics are wide-ranging, having included marketing, insurance contracting, compensation models, staffing, billing, meaningful use, Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) and a cadre of other topics. In addition to receiving real time advice from other administrators, attendees are able to meet one another face-to-face, which is beneficial for post-meeting connections. The expertise shared within the diversity of members is extraordinary.

2017 Annual Meeting Educational Agenda
This year’s educational agenda is diverse and offers the following topics for our members:  Keynote speaker, Dr. Zubin Damania (aka ZDOGGMD), Turntable Health, will present “Healthcare Remixed,” exploring innovative approaches to improve the health care system. General Session topics will be covered by experts discussing Trends in Spine and Neuro; the NERVES Survey Results; Risk/Liability in Value Based Healthcare; Coding Updates; Bundled Payments and what is happening in Washington, D.C.

The program also includes deeper discussion via Breakout Sessions. Attendees will have the opportunity to sit in on presentations on BPCI/CMS Spine Bundling Pilot Lessons Learned; RVUs/Coding for Managers; Patient Financing; Medicare Quality Payment Plans; Marketing for Your Practice and an opportunity for questions and answers related to the NERVES Socio-Economic Survey. The full schedule of events is available on our website.

Our members look forward to each Annual Meeting. The expertise shared with colleagues is very beneficial for new managers and experienced managers alike. Learning from each other and the development of relationships that become reliable resources for each member is what makes NERVES special. We are not alone in dealing with the difficult realities of running a neurosurgical practice and we have colleagues that can help us through various situations for the betterment of neurosurgical practices as a whole.

We urge each neurosurgeon to encourage their practice administrators to join NERVES and attend the 2017 NERVES Annual Meeting on April 20 – 22,in Los Angeles. Visit www.nervesadmin.com for a full agenda and registration information.
