NeurosurgeryMatch.org

Neurosurgery demands excellence, passion and commitment. As the most demanding of specialties, it is imperative that we train the best and the brightest. As the newest aspect of commitment to early support of neurosurgical trainees, the AANS has partnered with the Society of Neurological Surgeons (SNS), the AANS Young Neurosurgeons Committee (YNC) and the AANS/CNS Joint Section on Women in Neurosurgery (WINS) to develop NeurosurgeryMatch.org.

NeurosurgeryMatch.org is a website dedicated to medical students applying for a residency screen-shot-1-resizedposition in neurological surgery. In this age of information, it is critically important that applicants obtain truthful and trustworthy information, rather than hearsay. This website was crafted by residency program directors, faculty and residents and was  vetted by the leadership of the SNS and AANS, with ongoing updates by dedicated neurosurgeons and staff. It is an extraordinary effort on the part of organized neurosurgery, making neurosurgery one of only a very few specialties with a national website geared towards medical students.

This site provides an overview of the breadth of neurological surgery, the demands of the specialty, what it takes to become a neurosurgeon and the step-by-step process detailing how to prepare for the neurosurgical match. It provides tips on how to find a mentor, how to select and prepare for away rotations and what to expect for interviews, among many other things. Based on recent match statistics evaluated by the SNS, this site clarifies concerns, such as how many programs one should apply to and interview at, with parameters for how United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) scores and research factor into the application.

screen-shot-3-resizedCommissioned by the AANS and SNS after reaching out to medical students and trainees to discover how the match process could be improved, this site includes a standardized information grid about each residency training program that links to the respective websites, allowing for easy comparison, which can be sorted according to the applicants geographic and program size desires. There will also be an interactive forum moderated by the AANS YNC in order to have a place for open and candid, yet professional, discussions about residency training, the match process and other matters important to medical students applying for neurosurgery. Perhaps most unique will be the development of a protected share site to improve cost savings to the applicant with options for the exchange of interview dates and shared transportation and housing opportunities.

NeurosurgeryMatch.org has showed tremendous success thus far. Since going live Sept. 1, 2016, there have been 1,770 users and 7,687 page views. This initiative follows the AANS creation of AANS Medical Student Chapters, which escalated the AANS membership from 41 medical students to over 1,753 with 58 chapters in two years.

The creation of this website is the product of the ongoing theme of partnership between the AANS and SNS and the overarching dedication of the AANS to the training of our future generations.
