A new type of gene therapy targeting nerve growth factor (NGF) in the brain appears to impact the development of Alzheimer’s disease and may be an effective treatment method. Researchers from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine published findings in JAMA Neurology detailing the discovery and development of this unique gene therapy method. A brain-injection method was selected because the NGF protein was too large to pass through the bloodstream, requiring a direct transmission. Postmortem analysis revealed that subjects from the study displayed notably reduced generation compared to the control samples. “All of the Alzheimer’s disease brains showed anatomical evidence of a growth response to the growth factor,” said the principal investigator of the study. “This means that growth factors as a class consistently result in activation of dying cells in human neurodegenerative disorders.” To learn more about this study, click here.
