In a study of 19 stroke survivors who were suffering from mild to moderate hemiparesis in on of their upper limbs, movement and function improvement of the affected limb was found when each patient received either peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) or PNS and constraint-induced therapy (CIT). In the group of patients who received both types of therapies, even greater improvement was seen. “It appears that PNS has enormous promise as a clinical intervention to enhance outcomes of motor training for stroke survivors with mile to moderate hemiparesis,” Dr. Sawaki and colleagues conclude.
