Measuring the health of a patient’s brain can be difficult to do. However, a health brain is essential to a patient’s cognitive abilities. In a new study by the University of Illinois (U of I), researchers found that if a brain is healthy, then its metabolism will correspond with its fluid intelligence. Fluid intelligence is the measure of a patient’s ability to solve complex or unusual problems. “Fluid intelligence is one of the most useful cognitive measures available,” said U of I PhD candidate Aki Nikolaidis, who led the research with Ryan Larsen, a research scientist at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, and Beckman Institute director Arthur Kramer.
