Surprising findings suggest promise of mind-body techniques; more study needed

Patients who have been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) suffer through horrible memories and thoughts that can continue to play over and over in their minds. During the quietest moments, they can intrude and cannot be switched off. In a new study by a team from the University of Michigan and VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, promise was shown in mindfulness training for enhancing the ability to manage those destructive thoughts. “The brain findings suggest that mindfulness training may have helped the veterans develop more capacity to shift their attention to get themselves out of being ‘stuck’ in painful cycles of thought,” says Anthony King, PhD, a University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry researchers who led the new study in collaboration with VA psychologists.
